\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Harry Partch est un compositeur am\u00e9ricain du XXe si\u00e8cle, n\u00e9 en 1901 \u00e0 Oakland (Californie) et mort en 1974 \u00e0 San Diego (Californie). D\u00e8s son plus jeune \u00e2ge, Harry Partch est habitu\u00e9 \u00e0 un plurilinguisme vocal et musical\u00a0; son p\u00e8re parle en mandarin, il \u00e9coute chanter (et chante) en espagnol et dans des langues am\u00e9rindiennes\u2026 Il est assez vite frustr\u00e9 par le syst\u00e8me d\u2019accordage \u00e0 douze sons, consid\u00e9rant qu\u2019il ne peut retranscrire correctement les subtilit\u00e9s de la voix parl\u00e9e\u00a0; sa consistance dramatique naturelle. Le livre d\u2019Hermann von Helmholtz, On the sensation of tone<\/em>, fut une v\u00e9ritable r\u00e9v\u00e9lation\u00a0; lui ouvrant un nombre infini de possibilit\u00e9s. Fort des exp\u00e9riences de cette ouvrage, il \u00e9crivit Genesis of a Music<\/em>. Il y oppose d\u2019abord la musique abstraite et la corpor\u00e9alit\u00e9<\/em>\u00a0\u00e0 travers les si\u00e8cles et les tendances am\u00e9ricaines, puis y d\u00e9veloppe son propos musical, sa th\u00e9orisation et son application instrumentale sur ses premiers instruments.<\/p>

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Un des int\u00e9r\u00eats de la musique de Partch est de transmettre les intentions du corps par la musique. Chez lui, la corpor\u00e9alit\u00e9<\/em>\u00a0(Corporeal Music<\/em>) se d\u00e9finit par l\u2019utilisation de la po\u00e9sie, du corps\u00a0; sa vocation \u00e0 \u00eatre spirituelle (etc.) et s\u2019oppose \u00e0 la musique abstraite (Abstract Music<\/em>), qu\u2019il consid\u00e8re comme d\u00e9connect\u00e9e du besoin d\u2019expression corporelle et ainsi, d\u00e9nu\u00e9e d\u2019une certaine spiritualit\u00e9 car purement instrumentale et non-verbale. Il y a une r\u00e9elle volont\u00e9 de la part d\u2019Harry Partch de revenir \u00e0 une musique plus palpable, trouvant son sens dans l\u2019expression corporelle et po\u00e9tique. Auparavant, musique et textes n\u2019\u00e9taient qu\u2019une seule entit\u00e9. Ainsi, le texte occupe une part importante de l\u2019art dramaturgique de Partch\u00a0; essayant de traduire au plus pr\u00e8s ses inflexions, ses nuances, ses modulations, parfois imperceptibles, que l\u2019on retrouve dans la d\u00e9clamation. Dans un souci de non alt\u00e9ration de l\u2019expressivit\u00e9 intrins\u00e8que du texte, Harry Partch ex\u00e9cuta sa musique par le biais de proc\u00e9d\u00e9s homophoniques et monophoniques (n\u2019emp\u00eachant pas pour autant une grande pr\u00e9sence du contrepoint), se rapprochant parfois de la monodie accompagn\u00e9e. Il s\u2019inspira beaucoup de la musique antique grecque. Pour parvenir \u00e0 ses fins musicales, il divisa l\u2019octave en 43 sons.<\/p>

Toujours en s\u2019inspirant de la Gr\u00e8ce Antique, il \u00e9crivit Oedipus \u2013 A Music-Dance-Drama<\/em>\u00a0(1951, 1952-54, 1967), \u00e0 partir de la pi\u00e8ce de Sophocle \u0152dipe Roi<\/u><\/em>\u00a0(v. 425 av. J.-C.) qui s\u2019apparente \u00e0 un op\u00e9ra dramatique. Puis un autre, \u00e0 partir des Bacchantes<\/u><\/em>\u00a0(v. 405 av. J.-C.) d\u2019Euripide\u00a0: Revelation in the Courthouse Park \u2013 After <\/em>The Bacchae\u00a0of Euripides<\/em>, en 1960. Ces op\u00e9ras (comme tout op\u00e9ra ou drame-musical), ont des ch\u0153urs\u00a0; peu ordinaires et restreint, de femmes et (ou) d\u2019hommes, dirig\u00e9s par un coryph\u00e9e<\/em>.<\/p>
